A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

4.75

Okay when I first started this, I was just feeling like I missed the wayfarer series and those characters. But it didn't take long for me to fall in love with this universe too. I have an extreme case of being Becky Chambers-pilled, but for good reason!!

Her books are a masterclass in worldbuilding IMO. She feeds it to you in a cohesive way that makes sense, without dumbing anything down and keeping everything concise. I mean, this is a novella for gods' sakes, and the world is both whole and complex. Her characters too just jump off the page. I am them, they are my friends, they are very real to me.

This is a beautiful, hopeful piece of speculative fiction that had me emotionally wrought, occasionally crying and/or laughing out loud. This story feels like a warm hug from someone you love, and the voice of a trusted friend telling you you're doing great, everything is going to be okay. I concede that some of the messaging in this one felt a bit preachy, but I needed to hear it so what can I say. Maybe not for everyone and I understand (although I disagree). Psalm is in the title so just expect that.

I'm excited to continue reading the entire Becky Chambers catalogue [continuing Wayfarers at the moment]. If Becky Chambers has 1 fan, it is me. If she has 0 fans, I am dead.
