There were really vague elements of familiarity when it comes to this fantasy novel however I think the familiarity is what helped me remain engaged with this novel. A teen girl Ahn,who is unfamiliar with her family’s whereabouts in what we presume is ancient China fears for her life when her magic provokes an attack on two men in the village plaza. She is forced to leave in order to protect her Grandma. In this universe, magic is forbidden and there are priests that are told to wipe out magic users. Enter our love interest, Altan, a prince who is assumed dead but he wants to take the throne and destroy the person that he thinks will lead to the country’s demise. The pair eventually meet and of course the twists & turns ensue. Barely at 450 pages, this novel seems daunting but the chapters are extremely short so it’s easy to keep pace with this one. A lot of figurative language(mostly similes.) If you enjoy young adult fantasy with a Chinese fantasy twist, this is great for you (: I’m hopeful there is a sequel since the epilogue hinted at someone else being added to the mix.
