Malice by Coralee June

Okay, this book was fucked up! It’s a dark mafia romance and while I have no problem reading about violence a few things about this book really made me go “?!”

TW for domestic abuse (once, not to heroine); fetishes mentioned that describe animal abuse (not described); urination out of fear; on page murder; past torture and assault described; and a torture killing involving a curling iron and a… rectum.

I think the premise of this is really cool. A poor girl with a fascination of murder (and a podcast about murderers) is best friends with a mafia princess. But one day the mafia princesses brothers find out and all hell breaks loose. Think Stockholm Syndrome slash blackmailing the heroine, Juliet, into working for them.

I love a dark and twisted hero but none of the guys really stepped up to the plate for me. Anthony came closest. He was kidnapped and tortured a year or two ago and has permanent damage done to his psyche because of it. But let me compare this to Den of Vipers, which has a psychotic hero as well (Diesel) - Diesel’s issues are addressed and it’s shown how Roxy helps him cope. He wants to torture and hurt people, he has psychotic episodes where he hallucinates fire. She revels in his pain/sadism and pulls him back from his episodes like an anchor. None of that was discussed in this book. It was kind of like, “ok, Anthony is broken, but Juliet likes it.” But how will she help him heal? Does she help him heal at all? Why can he touch her but no one else? I don’t think we got enough info about his past and his trauma, and the fact that he had a “show” at the club
Spoilerwhere women sucked him off through a glory hole!?!? We literally saw it once and then it was never mentioned again.

Malice/Nicholas… I just don’t feel I know him. I didn’t understand how he jumped from thinking she was a rat > employing her > being in love with her. There wasn’t enough relationship/emotional build up for me to buy into that. I would’ve believed it more if they were just fucking.

And William… don’t get me started. I don’t even know him. After 3 years he put so much of his own projections onto Juliet that were not healthy or realistic at all.

The drama with Cora felt like a lot of nothing.
SpoilerThere was all this talk about her and then they didn’t even “deal with her” at the end.
I’m wondering if we’ll get more books in this series based on the four of them?
