As rich, full, and creative as Asimov’s vision of a far future time genuinely is, it takes nothing away from his great mind if a reader is amused by the things he didn’t imagine. And so the great capital planet of Trantor prints tens of millions of extra newspapers on an eventful day, a roomful of people put their wristwatches to their ears to see if they are still ticking, and a student composes her assignment by dictating to a typewriter which renders her speech in perfect handwriting on purple paper with peach margin lines. We’ll soon be coming up on 75 years since first publication, and it’s still a great story.
