A delightful premise that sets up some excellent satire — what would it really be like to have a child attend a magic school? Buying potion ingredients off Etsy, taking turns sitting the class jackalope, avoiding chocolate and garlic in lunches for the werewolves and vampires, mages offended by Harry Potter-induced “stereotypes”; this story was so fun to read for a fantasy-lover such as myself.
It was also very heartfelt, offering a great perspective on academic pressure, anxiety, being an outsider, a parent, and the importance of finding your people. A little too emotionally stressful to just be a cozy fantasy, the book is overall better for the depth of feeling it evokes. Fun, witty, touching, and cute.
