I shouldn’t have enjoyed this book as much as I did. The plot is thin and the writing needs work. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that many probably-involuntary anacolutha in a single book. But – and it’s a major but – both Morgan and Mei stole my heart. They’re both so lovely and layered they make up for everything else. Sure, Morgan is a bit too good to be true at times but she has her own flaws and issues. And Mei is fascinating, as a woman and as a character. And it’s not just them, the secondary characters are excellent as well.

Since I said I’d note when the boy wizard books are mentioned, I have to say they are here, not in any way necessary to the story. However, if you’re in the mood for a heartwarming book, this could be the one for you. Definitely a promising debut. 3.5⭐️
