Blood Promise by Richelle Mead

3.0

As the fourth book in this series, Blood Promise, is my least favorite. I understand the need for it, to show Rose grieving and coping with the loss of Dimitri. Also, it's a soul searching quest for Rose, for her to "find" herself. And while I really liked the first half of the book, it could have been summed up on a lesser scale. The second half of the book...OMG! I'm devastated! I can't even talk about my feelings without giving anything away...I'll leave the rest for later...but I did cry, tears rolled down my face..."That's what I was suppose to say..."

Blood Promise picks up where the third book (Shadow Kiss), left off. Rose has set off on her quest to find, and kill, the love of her life. Adrian and Lissa continue their training with Spirit. A new headmaster is brought into the school, Lazar, with his daughter, Avery, and son, Reed. Adrian and Lissa quickly become friends with Avery and that's when Lissa's life spirals out of control.

"I ignore authority all the time. It's not hard once you get use to it."
"Just don't let them convert you." He winked. "I like you being the sinner you are."
"You're burned into my mind forever. There is nothing, nothing in this world that will ever change that."
"You live up to your brash reputation. Delightful."
"I had no idea such a fierce Strigoi killer would be so beautiful."
"Alive or undead, the love of my live was a badass."
"I swear it. The next time I go do something stupid that may get me killed, you can come along."
"Do you believe in fairy tales?"

The author did a good job at showing dual story lines when the book is from Rose's perspective. Through their bond, Rose was able to check in on Lissa and see what was unravelling. I wish we had more dream scenes with Adrian though...his character is starting to develop into a great guy. I'm a little upset Christian wasn't in the book as much as I thought he should be, but, then again...look what happened the Dimitri.
She showed us flashbacks about Rose and Dimitri's relationship that we didn't see in the prior books. This helps us feel Rose's heartbreak even more, remembering the good natured Dimitri full of love. But it also made it that much more devastating when we finally meet the Strigoi Dimitri.

I read the first chapter of the next one, Spirit Bound, immediately. I'm just as heart broken, yet I also have renewed hope that the series may have a happy ending for Dimitri.

So...I am crushed with what happened to Dimitri's character. I was hoping his love, control, and sheer willpower would have over powered the evil Strigoi nature. But alas it didn't. Dimitri is unkind, uncaring, and evil. He still cares about and wants Rose, though I don't think he's able to feel love. He only wants her because she's strong, powerful, and will make a great asset to his cause. I kept hoping that he'd release her, that he was testing her of some sort, one last lesson as her mentor. After she escaped, I thought he'd help her out of Russia. I thought he did finally feel that love, but no.

On the bridge, my heart broke and tears literally ran down my face. I thought maybe at that point he felt love again. Then the very end showed my fears and proved me wrong. The letter is cute though, humorous too. If this wasn't included, I'm not sure I would have rushed to start the next book.
