Liesl & Po by Lauren Oliver

5.0

the first time i read this, i was 12. it was at that time, i fell in love with the way lauren oliver wrote her story. as a child, what i was reading in my dainty smartphone was so beautiful and magical. it was when i was inspired to write, when i thought that i really do want to become a novelist when im older.

now, im not quite sure if i read this another time apart from that, but reading it for the entire day yesterday made me feel so nostalgic. the writing is divine, and i admire it so much. i feel so lucky because after more or less than 6 years, i finally have my own copy and boy, is it stunning. there was a time yesterday when i was reading the novel when i put it down for a bit and said, "this is the writing that made me fall in love with lauren oliver's storytelling," out loud. i looked at my shelf to see her works there: the replica duology, broken things, before i fall, rooms and the spindlers. liesl and po truly is the book of hers that i love the most.

short, somewhat proper review: liesl and po is a heartwarming story that all ages would absolutely love. liesl meets the ghost, po and its pet bundle after her father dies. out in the alley, the apprentice of an alchemist longs to meet the girl in the attic (liesl!). a mix up happens. all four of them find each other, and go on a quest while being hunted by those who are convinced that they stole the universe's most powerful magic. beautiful illustrations and even more beautiful storytelling. this is a book my kids would definitely have to read while growing up.

!! spoilers from here !!

Spoiler also, since i reread [b:Rooms|13579626|Rooms|Lauren Oliver|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1429900056l/13579626._SY75_.jpg|19163833] a few months back, i noticed how similar they were: both feature ghosts that weren't violent, and both novels involve the burning of a house that holds a lot of memories. oh and, having a dead character buried close to the said house. i just thought it was super interesting and i don't think i would've caught that back then. (yeah, defo not, as a kid.)
