Straying significantly from my normal rating system to give this 4 stars, and here’s why. Normally my ratings are based on largely my personal enjoyment of the book, and secondarily on how well it was written (from my non-author POV, so I recognize I’m not an expert). With 4 stars, I rated this one highly only because I think this novel offers a very important commentary on current events, and an opportunity to reflect on our involvement (or lack of it). Are we turning away and ignoring oppression because it has no direct impact on us, or taking opportunities to do the next right thing, even if it seems small?
All that said, this was hard for me to get through. Dystopian novels aren’t my jam and this book felt opposite of the vibe I wanted, but sometimes we need to dive in to hard things and this was one of those times.
