This book reassured me that my standards for a fantasy novel aren’t too high.
It hooked me early, had deeply flawed but still relatable characters, an interesting magic system, a “I really should have seen that coming” twist, real-world themes… all in one stand-a-lone book. I don’t need ALL of that in one book but man I’ll take it.
Lost a half star because in the lead up to the final act we were no longer privy to the character’s thoughts and plans, which made some of their actions seem rushed or poorly considered. But overall? Very satisfied.
