The Secret
by Julie Garwood
4.5 STARS
At four years old Frances Catherine and Judith became friends before they even knew they should be enemies. English born Judith makes a promise to Frances Catherine that should she ever become pregnant Judith would be there by her side during the childbirth. Judith vows to keep this childhood promise when Frances Catherine's brother-in-law Iain Maitlain a Scottish Laird comes to fetch her. On the journey to the Highlands Iain and Judith's wills and morals seem to clash at every turn. The strength and stubborness the two have turns into passion that neither can avoid. But Judith has a secret that only Frances Catherine knows and could cause Iain to hate her.
I really loved this novel. The characters are so realistic and warm and the descriptions allowed me to see the time and place. While it is not as intense and detailed as Gabaldon's series I found myself comparing the two in regards to Scots and Brits. I have read Garwood's Buchanan series and LOVE it for not just the suspense but the realistic relationships between the hero and heroine. This is my first Garwood historical romance and I can see the same passion and suspense. I definitely will read more!
