Henry VI, Part 1 by William Shakespeare
4.0
Henry VI is one of Shakepeare’s more forgotten history plays, but it holds up as one of his more interesting. The language isn’t as pretty as his superior work is, but the story is wide ranging, but narrowed in focus. There is little here that feels out of place, and after reading Richard II, Henry IV, Henry V, Henry VI moves the story right along smoothly. I particularly liked the depiction of Talbot and his tragic death a moving scene. I was a bit perplexed at Shakespeare’s portrayal of Joan of Arc as she starts off traditional, before devolving into a demon conjuring seductress. Joan was an odd aspect to an otherwise stellar drama.
