The Summer I Died by Ryan C. Thomas
5.0

Easily one of my favorite reads so far.

Brief description: Roger comes back for summer break from college to spend it reminiscing with his best friend tooth. A farewell to their childhood. They decide to go shooting in a new less busy area in the woods. Everything was going well although bittersweet until they hear a woman screaming in the woods. Nothing they could’ve imagined causing those screams is true. Nothing as horrific and brutal as the true source. Roger and tooth find themselves trespassing on the land of a psychotic serial killer and it’s time to play fukd up game of dice… I mean fate.

I. Loved. This. Book. It was brutal, it was heartbreaking, it was isolating, it was unkind, it was vile, stressful. Everything I love in a horror. ESP a slasher style horror. I’ve seen people rate this lowly because of the bigoted speech by some of the characters. But imo not all characters are written to be likable and that’s how I felt about them. Their bad parts made them seem more real. They were very “boys will be boys” but I think that’s how the character viewed themselves and weren’t written in a way to condone that mentality. So don’t come for me about that. That being said *chefs kiss*. Can’t wait to read the following books in the series.
