In the Shadow of Lightning by Brian McClellan

Decently entertaining with an interesting world and magic system. I did not like the overuse of the word "glassdamn" even by the end of the book it still did not feel natural for characters to say it. The romance between Tessa and Demir fell short for me, it was hard to read through any aspect of that.

I also felt the reveal of the Yuglid (and their history of the world) was not foreshadowed heavily enough for the impact it had on the story, or seems will have in the following novels. I didn't realise until reading the wiki that the insect man that attacked the army was a Yuglid or the thing Demir saw in the window was one, as the descriptions were so different to when the Tall Man pulled off his skin. The tentacles were such a large part of that description, and I feel they weren't mentioned enough when Idrian fought it.
