The God of the Woods by Liz Moore
5.0

this book was everything i wanted it to be and more. dark, atmospheric, and twisty; its a brilliant mystery novel. on top of that, it falls into my favorite genre: books about very messed up families.

my favortie thing about this novel though, is how grounded it feels in comparison to a lot of other thriller/mystery books with similar plotlines. a trend ive noticed is that mediocre thrillers often rely on shock value to replace narrative depth; but this book felt more real than that. here, the twists feel more like a bonus reward than a crutch, and i loved every one.

it wouldve been easy to write this book as a fast-paced page turner, but doing so wouldve erased all of the fun of a slow burn; i adored the way the story took on layers as the book progressed. besides that, i just love the way this book was written - and even with no disapparances involved wouldve likely been interested in all of the drama between the characters.

i guess cant keep giving everything i read five stars; but ive been reading some pretty damn good books lately - this being one of them.
