I am astonished that Emezi got me to root for this particular story the way that they did. This is a touching, mature, complicated look at love and grief situated against the lushest island backdrop of art, food, culture, friendship, family, and nature. Stunning from any angle. One of my favorite things about this book is how not heavy handed the writing is. Emezi has a delicate touch that keeps us inside Feyi's head and aligned with her POV. At first, I felt like this book was like, pardon me, watching a trainwreck. And by the end I felt so grateful for the journey my eyes were misty.

Of course I recommend it. Get in here, folks, the water is so fine.
