Planetfall by Emma Newman

This book is excellent but not light escapism. It is a story about about mental health, dystopian futures, trauma and loss. The author's own grief is very apparent thought the book, I hope that writing this book was as cathartic for her as reading it was for me.

Octavia Butler felt like a major inspiration for this book as it shares many of the same themes (in particular the parable series and xenogenesis albeit with less conversation about racism). The writing is beautiful, the plotting is tight, and the world building is lush and intriguing (the implications of 3d printing, biological architecture, and the climbing software you can download to your brain to scale structures. Very cool!). I highly recommend, if you are in the mood for something that will break your heart heal you back together again.
