To preface this review: I was given an ARC (eBook) of this by the author.
Definitely not for the faint of heart, Made A Monster hits nearly every trigger warning.
I devoured this in one sitting, I really couldn't put it down. I found the characters nostalgic and familiar, which is a weird thing to say about two incredibly fucked up people. Aesthetically and musically, they parallel my high school self and friends, and when the characters aren't at their most extreme, I can't help but empathize with them. Every single person in this book is a terrible person though, don't get me wrong.
It's honestly heartbreaking how everyone failed these kids, it was something I sat on for a couple days after I finished reading.
Overall, it was a very fun read! I would have given it a 4, but I felt there were a lot of name drops of bands and such so often that it took me out. Once or twice is fine, cause it helped me piece together the aesthetic and vibe of the couple, but after a while it just seemed like references for references sake. It's a very minor nitpick though. That, and I kept seeing "ruined" as a repetitive descriptor.
I believe this is the author's first novel, and I am excited for what comes next! Will be eagerly watching Nelson's work in the future.
