calebkuma 's review for:
The Great God Pan
by Arthur Machen
(via audiobook)
this book answers the question "what is the most evil thing you can think of?" with the answer "why- a woman, of course!" it is clearly a product of it's time, with some man trying to form a story around something unknowable by using something truly unknowable to him (the experience of femininity) and warping it into a cautionary tale of sorts. a the end of the book, you will HOPEFULLY find yourself asking "was she the villain, or was it the scientist who did this to her?"
despite this, i found it somewhat interesting and the story telling to be passable. it was a short read, but if it had gone on too much longer i think the cons would have outweighed the pros. im not shocked to find out afterwards that Arthur Machen was an acquaintance of Aleister Crowley, as his story is a very watered down and tangential product of Crowley's (still problematic by today's standards) influence for sure.
