Aya: Life in Yop City by Marguerite Abouet, Clément Oubrerie

Aya was my first graphic novel experience and WOW! I've never read anything like this before - it was amazing! Funny, stunningly beautiful, clever and an absolute joy to read. This graphic novel was required reading for a college anthropology course called "Understanding Contemporary Africa," and I think it complimented the other "more academic" class materials (textbooks, articles) beautifully.
It was a fun and memorable story sprinkled with political and cultural commentary from the author. I cannot wait to get my hands on books 4-6!
