This story was so ahead of its time. I struggled sometimes to connect, but mainly because I've read some stronger books in this genre. That's probably because they were inspired by this story. This novel is rich and historical significance for its honest slice of life portrayal which show the roots of what America has become: both an image of hope, and the deep inequities on which it is built.
