Dreadnought by April Daniels
3.75

Danny Tozier just witnessed the death of the famous hero, Dreadnought. As he passes his mantle on to her, the powers he gives Danny let her become the perfect version of herself. There's only one issue. Danny isn't out to ANYONE yet. She's spent the last years as a closeted trans girl, and now not only does she has secret superpowers, she's fully transitioned.

Between her house becoming less and less safe by the day, her relationship with her best friend becoming strained, and superheroes fighting over whether or not she deserves a spot in their ranks, Danny has a lot going on. But the woman who killed Dreadnought is still out there, and with the help of a newfound friend, Danny wants to avenge his death.

------------

This was a fun coming of age superhero story! The best parts were the growth that Danny went through, her friendship with Calamity, and the Utopia supervillain plot line. I do think that as far as superhero stories go, it is a fairly straight forward story-this story could slot right into a Marvel or DC comic book and it would fit right in. I do wish there was a bit more world building, but I understand why Daniels wanted to focus more on character development!

This book is very in-your-face when it comes to themes surrounding misogyny, transphobia, abusive parents, and dysphoria, so be careful about content warnings!
