neilers17 's review for:
Madame Bovary
by Gustave Flaubert
Mme Bovary ripped me in two. I've never loved a style so much while liking a story so little. Madame Bovary is an extremely annoying woman. I never liked her: she makes only bad decisions, she's shallow, and she's predictable. I knew the ending of this one well before page 100.
That said, Flaubert is rightly regarded as a stylistic master. His prose puts you in the world of the novel unlike any book I've ever read. It's filled with sounds, sights, smells--all vividly evoked and brought to life. All of this came through despite the translator. I hope B&N got another translator for their more recent version because whoever translated my edition was awful. Awkward phrasing and mistakes abound.
It's worth reading. Maybe I'll like his other stuff better.
