A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas

4.0

3.5 stars. Goodreads really needs to let us have half stars.

I couldn't bring myself to give this book a full 4 or 5 stars for a few reasons. Which I will get to in a minute because I want to praise the book first.

I loved the subtle take on beauty and the beast while throwing in some other fun along the way. The story was intriguing from the very beginning that kept you turning pages and craving more.

This is the first book in a very long time that has captured my thoughts every minute I wasn't reading it. Every free minute I had, I wanted to steal away and read another chapter.

I appreciated Rhysand as a character very much. I truly believe he has the most depth as far as his personality and character development. He's the Loki of this story, I think (but I'm only one book in, so who knows).

Now, for my critiques:
1. The writing was very one dimensional to me. Almost childish and young?? While the characters got better as the book went, the writing still felt kind of flat.

2. The timing was a little too convenient for everything, especially when I guessed the answer to the riddle the moment I read it. How does it take her 3+ months to get this riddle when everything she is doing is BECAUSE of the answer of the riddle. It's the very reason for the whole situation she's in. It just made it feel a little bit unrealistic. Granted, the whole book is about Faeries and magic and all that, so idk how realistic you can really get aha.

3. It didn't make me laugh and it didn't make me cry. It just kept me intrigued. I think if Feyre were a more complex and deep character, some of the events could have spurred more emotion for the reader. But she felt like she was just eyes for us to look through, to see the story unfold, rather than to be able to really feel what she was feeling.
