The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley

5.0

Holy moly, what a ride! Kameron Hurley is probably one of the best current authors of modern sci-fi and certainly one of my favourites. From the start, this book sounded absolutely right up my alley and it did not disappoint. It read extremely quickly and I did not want to put the book down. When I did, I kept thinking about it. The premise was so (for the lack of a better word) cool, but it was so much more than that. What Hurley set out to do here was very ambitious and not often seen in modern sci-fi. Needless to say, Hurley nailed it in the head chapter after chapter. Everything made sense - the characters were fully fleshed, complex and well-developed, the plot was enticing, well-paced and with a nice conclusion. But I think Hurley's strongest point is her voice - modern, unafraid, rebellious and outright inspiring at times. She painted what I found to be an accurate take on war and everything that is behind it - the backdrop, the soldiers' psyches and of course, the end-goals. The Light Brigade is a rightful successor to Joe Haldeman's Forever War, which is one of my favourite sci-fi books of all time. I would be unfair to give this book any less than five stars!.
