A complaint that I have that often took me out of the story is that some of the character development seems forced. For example, Elle realizing she’s self absorbed, it felt like she was being purposefully dense. There were multiple instances where she noted that Cal was looking at her longingly but didn’t realize he had been in love with her since they were kids until he finally kissed her. And for as accomplished as she believes her sister, Dr. Julia Cates is, she underestimates Julia’s perspective quite a bit throughout the book.
Otherwise, I found this book explored the notion of finding healing in unexpected places in a slow and intentional way with a bit of haunting energy. This book shows that your life can completely implode in the most unexpected ways with a magnitude you can never plan for and still, you will find a way to rebuild. And perhaps the setting of that rebuilding is in the last place you ever thought you would find peace with people you never thought could possibly understand you.
