While this was clearly an immigrant story, I struggled with the other themes. The author juggled time lines and character perspectives in a way that was often more confusing than illuminating. Just when you thought something would happen or that you had just learned something interesting about the character that would resurface later, it would switch and then never quite come back to it completely.

At times I thought the story was about love, but there was very little love when all was said and done.
Perhaps the story was about family? Achieving your dreams or the dreams your parents have for you? As the book ended, I had more questions than answers.
There was a lot of potential present for a good, rich story, however I felt that it got a little lost somehow.
