The Magicians
by Lev Grossman
A story about magic with a gritty twist: aka everyone is deeply unhappy and trying to chase it away with drugs, sex, alcohol or magical conspiracy. While it was an interesting story, I found Grossman's habit of using obscure 16th century words when perfectly sufficient 21st century ones were available frustrating and distracting. I got through about ~75% of it on my own enthusiasm, and then had to push to read the end.
I found Quentin to be deeply unlikeable, and I'm not certain if that was by design or not.
