Childhood by Tove Ditlevsen

Quite a beautifully translated work of self discovery, formative female friendships, and growing up with a deficit of opportunities. Somehow though, the tone felt slightly distanced. I'm interested enough to read the rest of the Copenhagen trilogy but perhaps the hype for this one did create some unrealistic expectations.

I also don't fully understand how an author would have such a distinct recollection of childhood. Even if she did speak to her family and friends, maybe maintained a journal, photographs to jog her memory, it still seems unfathomable to me how one could recollect in such detail and depth events that may have transpired years and years ago.
