Alma and How She Got Her Name by Juana Martinez-Neal

3.0

A father tells Alma Sophia Esperanza Jose Pura Candela about all the family members who inspired the different elements of her name except for "Alma," which is a name chosen just for her.

Alma's maternal grandmother gets less description and is harder to understand just from the story; the pictures help us see that she was an activist, marching with a group with signs that say "escucha," "piensa," and "denuncia" (roughly: listen, think, complain). There is no mention of Alma's mother at all, and the father says, "I picked the name 'Alma' just for you," implying that he chose all the other names as well.

The attractive colored-pencil illustrations are mostly grayscale with red/pink and blue highlights and detail.
