The Billionaire Needs a Bodyguard by Ravina Hilliard

3.0

I was provided with a complimentary copy of the book from Dawn Hill Productions in exchange for an honest review

Not a bad read overall. Decent, but not great.

Small stuff:
-Some of the colloquialisms used don’t seem to fit a contemporary romance novel. For example. ‘You’re a handsome devil.’ Just made me cringe.
-Some word misuses. ‘She found nothing innocuous’. (Location 903 on kindle). It should likely read ‘she found everything innocuous.’ Also the use of Moor instead of more (location 1161 on kindle).
Structure: the chapters are long and could using breaking up.

Bigger stuff:
I was confused when the main characters first met. Lex had such emotional reactions to Michael calling her a derogatory name for a escort when 1) she’s not. She’s playing one undercover and 2) she’s a professional security consultant whose been under cover before for other roles. She continues to respond viscerally to being called a whore. Even if she was an actual escort, I don’t think she would flinch at hearing those words. This seems odd that she is portrayed at being so emotional for this case.

My biggest confusion over this book centers around not knowing enough about the personality of Lex, the main character, to understand how she falls for Michael, the billionaire she’s hired to secretly protect. The reader first learns about her job and her new assignment and then she jumps into the new undercover assignment. I know who she’s trying to play as a character but don’t know the difference between that versus who really is to discern how she is with Michael. She’s portrayed as insecure about her physical attributes (she seems to have a more slim and athletic body without as many curves traditionally associated with “ideal attractive” women). Beyond that, her loyalty to her boss and annoyance at her colleague/ex are the only inklings of her character.

Her reactions and giddiness to being doted after is over shadowing her role as a trained security agent. It seems demeaning almost, since she’s introduced as one of the top agents in her form. Her emotional reactions makes it initially seem like Lex can’t do her job, and it’s quite off putting.

As the book progressed I did enjoy reading it more. The characters go hot and cold a lot with each other which creates enjoyable tension. That conflict and tension adds to their attraction and desire for each other. I really liked the story arc and subsequent conflict that happened between Michael and Lex. It wasn’t a quick reconciliation. Michael had to work to find her and earn Lex’s time. The end proposal at the end seemed like a jump given all the secrets.
