Into the Water
by Paula Hawkins
TW: Suicide, Rape, and Abuse
“No one liked to think about the fact that the water in that river was infected with the blood and bile of persecuted women, unhappy women; they drank it every day.”
I have pretty mixed feelings on this book. At first I was enjoying it but as the book went on I kind of stopped caring as much. Starting with the characters, this book follows A LOT of perspectives, which at times I liked as it kept me on my toes but it was hard to follow at times as well. If you are going to read this book I would for sure recommend making yourself a character chart, as there is so many people that have complicated relationships with other people. My favorite POVs to follow were Lena and Jules, I also enjoyed hearing more about Nel's past. I don't know if it just me, but the way Nel was talked about, she literally acted like someone Lena's age but she was an adult so... I don't know maybe it was just me but I kept picturing Nel before she died as like a child.
The writing I was really enjoying at the beginning. It was dark and mystical and everything that I enjoy and expect in a thriller. The book is very slow paced which did not bother me at first but it took me a while to complete it. One of the big complaints of this novel is the realization, the bang, the big reveal, etc. No spoilers here but it was a bit disappointing... I don't like the direction it took and I thought it was really random. I was like "oh is that it???!!".
“Beware a calm surface—you never know what lies beneath.”
Again, I did like how this book talked about the river- I think that aspect was done very well. But between the pacing, some of the characters, and the ending, I was a bit let down. At the start of this book, I was tabbing a bunch of quotes and thought it could become a new favorite but it didn't quite turn out that way.
If you guys are looking for an atmospheric thriller you may enjoy it. If you are really experienced with thrillers I don't think this will offer anything new for you, in my personally opinion.
