2.5 stars.

The bones of a very fine short story or even novella are buried beneath an avalanche of rather dusty, old-fashioned prose in this slow-moving, reflective novel. Marani has some interesting things to say about identity and language but he seems incapable here of saying them concisely or even effectively. A disappointment.
