Serpent of Old by T.R. Pearson
5.0
"People will surprise you sometimes, just not nearly often enough."
Pearson has no equal in capturing the voice of the eccentric and shiftless characters that populate the Virginia/North Carolina lowlands. This book is not quite as good as his "Short History of a Small Place" (my favorite book ever), but it's still a very pleasant read. The story could roughly be described as a mystery, but honestly it's more of a character study and winding tale. Hilarious and thought-provoking.
