Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart

2.0

Witches Steeped in Gold was one of my most anticipated releases after reading the synopsis online and I am so beyond disappointed with this book.

From a cultural standpoint, this book is marvellous. The Jamaican background and setting was lovely to see as I feel within YA, unfortunately diversity is not something we see a lot.
I really enjoyed the index with character names and which order they were from as-well as certain scarification certain groups would have. It was a nice touch!

However the pacing of this novel was seriously questionable and became such a slug fest to get through considering its relatively short. The characters for me were completely indistinguishable from each other and there were no arcs interesting enough to keep me engaged. Whilst the writing itself was lovely, due to lack of character interest, this led to lack of plot interest which culminated in lack of book interest.
Furthermore for a book centred around witches, the lack of any sort of magical component and a completely underdeveloped magic system was a peculiar choice. This did not make any logical sense to me.

Ultimately this was not what I expected for a fantasy novel and was very low on the actual fantasy elements. What was there, was executed poorly in my opinion.

Will probably give the sequel a miss!
