Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto

3.0

Kitchen follows Mikage who finds herself an orphan after the passing of her grandmother. A young man named Yuichi, who worked at the flower shop her grandma frequented, reaches out and offers for Mikage to stay with him and his mother. What follows is a journey through grief and loss while finding joy again.

I really enjoyed stepping into Mikage’s world for a bit, riding the waves of grief with her while she found inspiration in the kitchen. The characters were lovable, leaving me teary eyed at some points. Who knew katsu could make someone cry?

The short story Moonlight Shadow that followed was also another brilliant look at grief and love. I was so glad I was able to read these both!
