The Bear and the Nightingale
by Katherine Arden
DID NOT FINISH
I couldn't get past the absurdly long beginning which feel like slogging through a dry prolouge. I usually like in depth descriptions that lean on the side of atmospheric, but if I'm 3 or 4 chapters in and almost nothing of plot is introduced... not my cup of tea.
I understand that describing the characters and setting is important, but this was excessive.
If I gave it more time, I'd probably find what other people love so much, but as it is, I can't justify the time sink.
The writing style was very distinct, though, and I did like that. When something feels like a unique voice, I get excited. That's no easy feat. I just wished this story had picked up a bit quicker.
