This pains me. I spent years trying to track down this novel only to find someone had uploaded a fan reading with sound effects and ambient music on YouTube, and the reading was really awesome. Unfortunately, the book is hot garbage and no selfless YouTuber is going to change that (thank you kind citizens for your 6 hour video, you have my respect and like and subscription).

There are flashes here of the B movie campiness that could redeem an otherwise super dumb plot, but it's mostly just super boring. I don't think I'll ever forget the brainy intellectual girl who secretly carried a 100 year old functional grenade for good luck, as if it wasn't going to somehow be important to the plot later. The villain is one of the maniacally evil types, but he comes off boring and generic.

The zombies in this one are a bit different. Some of them shoot guns, which I've always hated about the later RE games. The more interesting ones are more like invasion of the body snatchers zombies where they are mind controlled and you don't know who's infected. Unfortunately, this kind of zombie goes completely unused for all but a single scene near the end of the book, and it's not even a big twist. Just some spur of the moment idea by the bad guy to try and trick some people thats immediately obvious to the reader. There's just so much wasted potential there.

Instead, the plot follows Rebecca Chambers and a bunch of randos who go into a facility, try to get some t virus samples and get out, and it's really really uninteresting. Occasionally they get shot at, they almost never fight off zombies or monsters, and I don't even think we learned much about the world of Resident Evil. Overall the book is just a stinker and not worth anyone's time if I'm being honest.
