Concrete Rose
by Angie Thomas
Another eye-opening read for a Missouri Gateway Nominee. This story follows Maverick and his many struggles, struggles someone his age shouldn't have: gangs, fatherhood, living day by day while worrying about the how. I enjoyed how well written his story was, I nearly cried many times, and I loved how the author didn't shy away from the tough but realistic moments that come with parenting. I haven't read others by this author but I will certainly now.
