Darkest Mercy by Melissa Marr

5.0

Darkest Mercy is the thrilling conclusion to the Wicked Lovely series, it is where most of the problems created in the rest of the series are resolved and where relationships with others are tested, purely by bitter hatred, greed, love and betrayal.
The beginning of the book starts with Keenan, the Summer King, still missing and Irial fatally injured from the wound from Bananach's knife made of poison. I found this deeply intriguing because we never got to see the aftermath of the fight in Pins and Needles at the end of Radiant Shadows.
As the book moves on, some of my favourite characters died. Personally, I think Gabriel's death should have been more dramatic — he was the head of the pack for crying out loud! I think his fight with Bananach should have lasted longer and been more intense/dramatic. This way, it would have made his death seem more heroic in my mind. Compared to Bananach, he didn't really put up much of a fight.
I enjoyed Donia's little bits of sarcasm at Keenan because it must have annoyed him. Keenan deserved this kind of treatment after what he'd done. He was supposed to be the Summer King…and then he goes and hides in a cave for a few months.
Smart move, Keenan.
I liked how Aislinn worked well in Keenan and Seth's absence, regardless of all the stuff she was being put through. She's the Summer Queen, so shouldn't the Summer KING be there for her?
Totally helping Aislinn, Keenan. I mean, would you like it if Donia hid in a cave for three months? I'm guessing not…
The ending was probably the best part of the book — it made up for some of the bad qualities. I was never expecting Leslie to return and try and soothe/help Niall and Irial. That was pretty sweet of her. However, agin I thought the fight should have been a little longer, including more action before the face off with Bananach, Aislinn and the other regents. For me, the book made Donia seem a bit lazy at this point. I mean, she wasn't doing much except shoot ice all over the place. She didn't get physical with anyone until she was with Bananach.
Overall, I think the plot was excellent, the book flowed well and concluded the series exceptionally. There were no loose ends that occasionally happens when an author tries to end a series/trilogy.
I really enjoyed the series though. I'm having a hard time believing that it's all over…
