when i first read abm and was crushed by the way it spoke to me, i have never actually thought about the amount of work that had been put into it, the effort it must've taken. that book was, to me, something extremely personal, i was overwhelmed by the uncomplicated closeness of it and couldn't quite think about it as something that was not a creature of its own.

it's different with angels & man. sure, it's still a book that goes deep, doesn't pull its punches, that screams and tears at you like an open wound. yet, i think, this time around — more so because of the way the story is told, rather than anything else — it is so much more noticeable just how good the author is at crafting something like this. it feels like a behemoth, like an eternity of a book, but not because of the length or the amount of events (although there are many). it's because of how much is told. so many characters, so many fates intertwined, and each one of them holds such visceral power. this must've been a nightmare to put together. hopefully, as pleasant a nightmare as it was to read it
