Lore by Alexandra Bracken

2.0

I'm super sad about this book. Not only because I really wanted to like it but mostly because another mediocre book is hailed as a YA hit.

I know that many people have loved it but I'm struggling so hard to understand why because in my objective view, the book is so plot-driven with zero character development and a lukewarm romance that I wonder about the reason everyone liked it so much. Since the Greek Pantheon is an oversaturated topic in YA fantasy though, I think that exactly because there's a lack of good books in this domain, even meh books rise up the ranks.

"Lore" had an interesting premise but very poor execution and constant dialogue that tried to establish the characters but utterly failing. If it weren't for the voice actor, I wouldn't be able to finish this book. The writing felt detached, the heroine felt stiff and I couldn't care less about the story and the characters.

This is an example of using well-worn tropes together, an oversaturated topic (but equally exciting to explore because apart from the Percy Jackson books there aren't any good Greek mythology-inspired books out there,) and a try-hard Hunger Games wannabe setting--if you try so hard to write a book to justify your comp titles, then the book loses its magic so to speak.

Won't get back to the series (if a second book gets published) and also not sure I want to read more of Bracken books.
