Death's Bloom by Lily Mayne

4.0

This is one of the darker romances I've read and it definitely is down to my reader compatibility with Mayne's writing that I still enjoyed this. She just has a way with making completely bonkers ideas that I usually wouldn't be interested in into stories that keep me coming back.

I'm familiar with the legend of Bluebeard but don't really know any specific stories. I figured this would be similar to Crimson Peak with a lot of dead boyfriends in a basement or something, but it ended up taking a complete left turn into a demonic possession-based threesome. This story is definitely for the reader that not only doesn't mind but prefers morally sus characters.

My main issue was with Ari's complete lack of curiosity and need for more information. He just immediately responded with fear or shut down and totally disbelieved Theo after Theo told Ari his background story. I actually find this a lot with stories that have immortals and it's so stupid. I personally would be like *chinhands* TELL ME EVERYTHING. I'd have a billion questions about just everyday life in different centuries, how they became immortal, etc. But Ari is just like nope. It's nuts and then he is a complete hypocrite, immediately thinking the only possibility is that Theo is literally insane, despite having interacted with the demon his own self just the day before. That was so frustrating.

Overall, it's much longer than it needs to be but because I enjoy the writer so much, it didn't feel like a hardship to read and I blasted through 400+ pages in two days. I hope the other books in the series are as compelling.
