Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty

3.0

Serafina and the Black Coat is about a young girl in the 1800s(?) who secretly lives in the basement of the Biltmore Estate with her father until one night she sees a girl absorbed by a man in a black cloak and she becomes determined to stop him and save the girl.

What intrigued me:it's a young readers fantasy with a girl protagonist

Strong Female Lead
Serafina is quick-witted, independent, and headstrong. She knows what she has to do and she will do it alone if no one will help her. She continues to search for the kidnapper even against her father's wishes and in spite of the danger.
Her immaturity really shows though, because she's been sheltered from most human contact her whole life. This isn't bad writing, but instead of being a book enjoyable for all ages it becomes a book for middle grade readers.

Overall, do I recommend?
I really enjoyed this, although I did find the way she spoke to her father weird (an odd and inconsistent attempt at an 1800s accent used only when speaking to her dad) and it's definitely a middle grade book. There was enough character development and enough questions still left that I'm planning on reading the sequel
