Mary Poppins by P.L. Travers

2.0

I'm going to be a bit grouchy here but Mary Poppins was a lot more dippy and sporadic than I expected. Yes, it's a children's book. Still, most young fiction maintains some appeal for the rest of the family. This book lacked an overall story arc. Mary Poppins appears. A series of unrelated, non-thematic and silly events happen. The children remain the same. The parents' lives are unchanged. Then Mary Poppins disappears with the changing of the wind.

Alternatively, one can clearly see the how this fits into a similar tradition as Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan—no coincidence all 3 were turned into films by Walt Disney. Further, the Disney picture is better than the book(s), finding a way to preserve the magic of Mary Poppins while reaching deeper into the hearts and minds of older folks.
