The End of the End of the Earth by Jonathan Franzen
3.0
***1/2, technically. The cover doesn't lie: This is at least half a book dedicated to readers that share, or are susceptible to sharing, Franzen's dedicated immersion in birdwatching (I admire birds, but I am not among those readers). Still, it's all well written; his meditations on birding manage to engage more than the reportage; and his other musings, on topics from literature to politics to climate change, retain his trademark crabby (some might say cranky) vulnerability, which I've always enjoyed.
