I liked the Earthsea trilogy well enough, but I always felt it was lacking a certain something, hence why I never picked up the later books. I should have known better.
'Tehanu' picks up years after Ged brings the restored crown and the former priestess Tenar to Havnor. After some study, she chose an ordinary life and raising a family. Her children are now grown and her husband has died. She is content, but events conspire to draw her in to larger stories. First she takes in and cares for a child disfigured by fire and abandoned by her abusive family. Second she is called to return to her old teacher who is dying, finally, Ged returns on the back of a dragon, irrevocabally changed.
This is a more mature book than the earlier Earthsea titles and reads best as it was written: after significant life experience. This was very enjoyable.
Earthsea
Next: 'Tales from Earthsea'
Previous: 'The Farthest Shore'
