The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels by India Holton

3.0

The writing style for this book is so fun; it borders on Mel Brooks-ian. Piratical ladies, parental issues, a keen sense of humor--what's not to love?

The answer is a significant portion of the book.

As fun and campy as this was, Cecilia never gets to be the capable badass that she consistently describes herself as. She comes across as the least capable of the ladies. While that is acknowledged at the end of the book to comedic effect, the reader isn't given a lot to actually love about her. Ned, the pirate-but-also-employed-by-royalty love interest, does far too much saving the day for my liking.

Basically, I wish Cecilia got to do something, as opposed to the nothing that she does in this volume. Other than swoon, of course. But just the once--couldn't let her do TOO much.
