A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

5.0

Well, the sequel took me MUCH longer to read, but that is not the book’s fault. I had a lot going on. Torch absolutely delivered in every way. It was such an excellent follow-up to Ember that, in more ways than one, it felt more like the second half of that story.

I loved the frantic need of characters in this book to continually be escaping from something. That was a major motif throughout, and it was weaved and crafted into the plot in such a masterful way by Sabaa Tahir (whom I adore).

There was so much heft and weight to the plot points in this book. Tahir is nothing short of genius in her knowledge of when to drive forward full steam ahead, and when to scale back for a quiet, intimate moment.

Met some new characters in this book, and completed arcs for some that we met in the first. Not to mention the fact that we got some incredibly heart-wrenching and gutting scenes involving some of those characters—two words: THRONE ROOM.

Finishing this book felt like completing the first cycle in a two-part series. I definitely plan to pick Reaper up before the year’s over, but I want to make my time between reading that one and the still-to-be-completed Book 4 as short as possible.

This sequel delivered on its predecessor every bit as well as Empire Strikes Back delivered on Star Wars. I can’t praise Sabaa Tahir enough for creating this wonderfully vivid world, and equally vivid and compelling characters who make me care so much about their lives and where they end up!
