by Jay Kristoff
I read this book in anticipation for Jay Kristoff’s book tour as he is coming to Brisbane on the 22nd of May. I can’t wait to meet him!!! (Spoiler: he was awesome!)
So the book! It was unlike anything I have ever read that’s for sure but in the best way possible. It kind of gave me Big Hero Six vibes which is one of my all time favourite Disney movies! There are so many great quotes I highlighted through out the book, I can't express enough how great of a writer Jay is!
Characters are amazing: First of all! Jay writes character and dialogue so freaking well! i really commend the way he is able to show character development and growth. I loved Lemon fresh, I think she is my favourite character, loved her name and her sass! I can't wait to learn more about her life since it was so sad to learn how she came into Eve's life. I really enjoyed her friendship with Eve, they would do anything for each other and in the mist of conflict they still managed to joke around and make light of the moment. Cricket was cute even though he would hate being called cute, I totally get how he feels being called little!
"stronger together...together forever."
Eve was BADASS! despite everything that happened in her past and everything that was going down in the present, she was more concerned for everyone else's safety and that is a quality in people I really value. I felt so sorry for Eve when she just felt like her whole life was a lie and everybody kept lying to her.
The world was complex and intriguing: I have read sci-fi in the past even though I say i'm not a huge fan of it but really looking at the books i have read this year so far, I really am and thanks to Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman! I have never read anything with robotics in it before and it was really cool, i love the whole concept of LifeLikes but it is really flipping creepy.
'the best loves are forbidden ones:' I totally get the whole Romeo and Juliet star crossed lovers since Lifelike's don't have the ability to actually love someone since they probably only love the idea of love which Jay mentioned in at his tour stop in Brisbane. Zeke was a bit of an ass saying that he wouldn't lie to Eve and he withheld a lot of major information that would have helped Eve fill in the pieces of her life. So I was mad at him too haha. I loved Zeke and Lemon fresh's friendship towards the end of the novel when they both were both facing the prospect of loosing a friend.
"There's nothing quite the same as sitting with a real book in your hands. Breathing in the ink and feeling all those wonderful lives beneath your fingertips... In between the pages i'm not myself." ~Eve
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this read! i read through it pretty quickly or perhaps I just really wanted to finish before I got the opportunity to meet him. Either way, I highly recommend this book for those who love sci-fi or want to try reading sci-fi, with strong friendships, murderous robots, assassin dogs and a smidge of romance.
